The Virgin Valley High baseball team, which defeated Moapa Valley on Friday to win the 3A Southern Region championship, will open state tournament play against Dayton at 4 p.m. Thursday at Fernley.

Dayton is the No. 2 seed from the 3A Northern Region after losing 16-1 against Truckee on Saturday. Dayton is 15-17 on the season. The Dust Devils lost their 3A Northern Region opening game to Churchill County, 16-8, and then worked their way back through the loser’s bracket to reach the championship game.

Dayton beat South Tahoe, 12-7, and then defeated North Valleys, 10-6. In the loser’s bracket final, the Dust Devils edged Fernley, 7-6, to reach the finals.

The Bulldogs are 23-5 on the season.

In the other state championship matchup, Moapa Valley will play Truckee. That game will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The winners of the first-round games will play at 1 p.m. on Friday, while the two losers will meet up at 10 a.m. The loser of 1 p.m. game will play the winner of the 10 a.m. game at 4 p.m. to determine who will play in the championship game

The championship game will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with a second game slated for immediately afterwords if necessary. Click below to see the state tournament bracket.
