Jacob was fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau. He was heading to his mother’s country, Padan Aram, and to his uncle Laban’s house. It was now nighttime, so Jacob laid down, and in a dream he saw a ladder extend from heaven to earth with angels ascending and descending upon it. In the dream the Lord gave Jacob the same promise He gave to his grandfather and father, Abraham and Isaac.

When Jacob woke up, he realized the Lord was present in that place, although he didn’t know it when he arrived. Therefore, he names the place “Bethel,” which means, “house of God.”

Jacob said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” (Genesis 28:17)

Using this story, Jesus reveals the same thing to His disciple Nathanael

Jesus said, “I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” (John 1:51)

Let’s not miss the significance of what Jesus said. By saying that the angels of God will ascend and descend upon Him, Jesus was saying that He was the ladder in Jacob’s story.

What a beautiful picture this now becomes. Jacob called it the House of God, and that the Lord was there. This is the church. The Lord Jesus is present within the church. Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20)

Therefore, it is within the church as we gather to worship God and study His word that the gateway is opened between heaven and earth, as Jesus opens for us the realities of heaven while we’re here upon the earth. Church is the place where heaven and earth meet.

Therefore, when we come to church, we need to enter in a spirit of reverence and expectation, because it is an awesome place, a place where heaven’s gate is open, and God’s counsel and blessing are opened and made known.

Therefore, we invite people to come to church, to come and see for themselves, and allow them to experience the reality of God and of heaven.
