Joseph L. Bowler Sr. Elementary School’s fifth grade student, Quade Griffiths, placed third in the Adventurous Authors short story competition.  Partnering with the Clark County School District, Las Vegas author, C. A. Hartnell, chose Quade’s real-life short story about a dirt bike race he participated in.  The contest ran during the first six weeks of school and had 360 entries from students throughout Clark County.  Hartnell announced the winner at J. L. Bowler during a special assembly attended by third through fifth grade students on Wednesday, October 7, 2019.

Quade received a cash prize, a Barnes & Noble gift card, a congratulatory letter from Hartnell, as well as a set of her four-book series, “The 1950’s Adventures of Pete and Carol Ann.”  In addition, J.L. Bowler came in third place for submitting the most entries.  Hartnell generously gave the school $750, a set of her four-book series, and an assembly where she  conducted a reading and spoke about what it takes to be a real author.

We are proud of our fifth grade teachers, who encouraged student participation, submitting 43 stories for the competition.

The contest was created by C. A. Hartnell to inspire and encourage third, fourth and fifth grade students to consider a career in writing by drawing upon an adventure they took or a true event in their life. All entries were judged on story creativity and the winning stories are published on C. A. Harnell’s website
