Virgin Valley High School behind 5 touch downs by running back Wyatt Delano crushed the Rancho HS Rams 62-12 Friday night in the Dawg Pound. Delano led a Bulldog rushing attack with 166 yards and accounted for 34 of the Bulldogs 62 points. The Bulldogs scored 14 points in the first period, 29 points in the second and 14 points in the third forcing a running clock the rest of the game. Delano scored first from 6 yards out. A Mebs Hollingshead to Kyler Sudweeks for 54 yards set up the score. Bulldog Tanner Fielding recovered a Ram’s fumble setting up the second score. Delano ran it in from 35 yards out giving the Dawgs a 14-0 lead. The Rams took advantage of a short field to score cutting scoring the Dawgs lead to 14-6 with 1:27 left in the first period. The Rams held the Dawgs on three plays forcing a punt by Will Barnum. Barnum faked the punt throwing a strike to Rafael Guzman for a first down to keep the drive alive. Hollingshead immediately hit Fielding for 30 yards a T.D. Delano ran for the 2 point conversion giving the Dawgs a 22-6 lead after one period.
The Dawgs held the Rams on their first possession of the second period setting up their next drive from their 37 yard line. Delano went off tackle for a 54 yard scamper to the Rams 27 yard line. Wyatt Anderson carried twice to the 16 yard line followed by a Sudweeks run to the one yard line. Delano finished the drive with his third T.D. of the game and a 30-6 lead. The Dawgs held once again forcing a Ram’s punt. Fielding fielded the punt on the Rams forty taking it in pushing the Dawgs lead to 37-6. The Bulldogs recovered a Rams fumble on the Rams 25 yard line. Two runs by Delano gave the Dawgs a T.D. and a 43-6 lead at the half.
A running clock to begin the second half was no match for the Bulldogs offense and defense as the Dawgs scored on their next three possessions. Delano went in for a six yard T.D. A Rams fumble and interception by Cooper Hughes set up T.D. runs by Sudweeks and Jason Abbott making the score 62-6. The Rams scored the final T.D of the game to finish the third period of the play. Bulldog reserves played the final period and the game finished with the Dawgs on top 62-12. The win gives the Dawgs a 2-0 record in 3A league play and 5-1 overall. “This was the first game this year when we had our whole team healthy,” said Bulldog coach Matt Woods. “Our offensive line did a great job making it easy for Wyatt to have a huge game.” The Dawgs host SLAM Academy in their next outing on Friday October 11 before finishing the season on the road against Sunrise Mountain and Moapa Valley. The Pirate game could be for all the marbles if each team goes in undefeated in 3A games.
