It’s time for the 6th Annual Mudd Volleyball Tournament sponsored by the Mesquite Nevada Rotary on May 11. The event will again be held in the dirt field next to the Eureka Hotel, 275 Mesa Blvd. As of this week, several teams signed up to compete for a trophy and bragging rights while raising money for the Beaver Dam High School Beautification Project. The money raised from registrations will go towards the next phase of construction. DJ Juan will be on site with his music spinning talents to help keep the crowds and players energized during the tournament.
Sources have confirmed that both the Mesquite Police Department and the Mesquite Fire Department have been quietly forming teams and practicing, preparing to become the Studs of the Mudd this year.
Besides winning trophies for outstanding play this year, teams who come up with the best or funniest team name will be awarded as well.
Virgin Valley Theatre Group‘s founder, Edwin M. MacKenzie, passed away on April 9, 2019. Thanks to “Ed” we have live theatre here in Mesquite.
Ed joined the Mesquite Arts Council Board in 1999. By 2002, Virgin Valley Theatre Group was born; the first few seasons’ performances were held at the Virgin Valley High School Theater.
In the early days, Ed and his wife, Wilma, scavenged props from garage sales. Sets were built in their garage and then taken to the high school for performances. Eventually, they were given the opportunity to move into the old elementary school. You know it as The Mesquite Community Theatre (MCT) but back then the theatre was painted white with tiny seats suitable only for grade school kids.
With Ed’s help and knowledge of theater, the Virgin Valley Theatre Group, Greater Mesquite Arts Foundation and the Mesquite Community Theatre volunteers were able to remodel the community theater into the venue you all know and love today.
A celebration of Ed’s life and his love of theatre will be this Saturday, May 11 at 5:00 pm. at MCT. Ed’s family invites you to share your memories of Ed and the theatre. Light refreshments will be served.
Remember to send in those event notices, things are going to be happening that you’ll want folks to know about. Send them to terin.bbm@gmail.com so you can everyone know what’s happening with your group or club.
