Starla A. Jewell-Kelly of Mesquite, Nevada, passed away on November 19, 2018, at the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home in Ivins, Utah.   Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon in September 8,1940, she grew up in Southern Oregon and attended college at what is now Southern Oregon University.  Starla taught school in Oregon and Alaska before furthering her education at the University of Oregon, earning a Master of Arts degree.  Starla pursued a career in community education and became the Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Oregon.  In 1988, Starla was selected as the Director of the National Community Education Association. She held this position until she retired to Mesquite, NV in 2004.  Even upon retirement, Starla continued to teach, working at local pre-schools and teaching piano lessons.  Starla enjoyed her friends, family and mostly her grand-children.  Starla was a consummate professional, a passionate educator, and a lover of the arts.  During her last months, Starla was surrounded by friends and family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kelly and is survived by her three children and four grandchildren.

Service will be held at the Veterans Center in Mesquite, Nevada, on December 7, 2018 at 2:00pm.
