Senior Tanner Reber runs through a big hole for a Diamondback touchdown during the first half of Friday’s game. Beaver Dam fell 32-16.

For three quarters, Beaver Dam appeared to be in control of Friday’s Homecoming contest against visiting Green Valley Christian of Henderson. Unfortunately, things unraveled for the Diamondbacks in the final quarter.

GVC scored 20 points in the final six minutes of play as the Guardians erased a 16-12 deficit and pinned a 32-16 defeat on the D-Backs at the Snake Pit.

The loss dropped Beaver Dam to 0-2 in 1A South League play and 2-2 overall while GVC improved to 1-0 in league play and 1-3 overall in its inaugural season of football.

Trailing 16-12 entering the final period, the Guardians used an 11-play, 40-yard drive to score the go-ahead touchdown. The drive, which consumed over six minutes off the clock, featured three third-down-and-long conversions by GVC that culminated in a 16-yard TD pass from quarterback Collin Killoran to Talon Smith on third-and-goal. The two-point conversion put the Guardians up 20-16 with 5:55 to play.

After taking over on their own eight-yard line, the Diamondbacks were forced to throw and on the first play from scrimmage, Smith intercepted a BDHS pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown putting the Guardians up 26-16 with 1:50 left.

Two plays later on Beaver Dam’s next possession, Smith capped the GVC comeback with his second pick-six – and fourth touchdown of the contest – racing 74 yards for the score with just 51 seconds remaining.

The Guardians opened the scoring at 4:18 of the first quarter when Killoran swept around the right side 10 yards for a touchdown. The conversion failed leaving GVC up 6-0.

The D-Backs answered quickly needing just 13 seconds to score. Quarterback Isaac Ojeda hooked up with Azzario Sepulveda, who had gotten behind the GVC secondary, for 65 yards and a touchdown. Tanner Reber ran in the conversion putting Beaver Dam up 8-6 with 4:05 left in the quarter.

On their next possession, the D-Backs used a 43-yard pass play from Ojeda to Sepulveda to open a seven-play 75-yard scoring drive. Reber burst up the middle the final four yards for the touchdown. Cesar Soto ran in the two-point conversion boosting the Diamondbacks’ advantage to 16-6 with 9:21 to go in the first half.

The Guardians came right back to score a minute later when Killoran dumped off a pass in the flat to Smith, who weaved his way 79 yards for a touchdown cutting the deficit to 16-12.

Reber, who didn’t play in the second half due to a lower leg injury, led Beaver Dam in rushing with 47 yards on nine carries while Sepulveda added 42 yards on 13 carries and had two receptions for 108 yards. Ojeda threw for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Killoran completed 7-of-12 passes for 159 yards and two scores to lead GVC while Smith rushed for 32 yards and caught two passes for 95 yards.

After a bye this weekend, Beaver Dam and will host Beatty Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Snake Pit.
