The Virgin Valley High School girls soccer team returns its two top scorers from last year’s playoff team. New Bulldog coach Scott Trimming can count on 10 players off the 2017 squad to make a run for the 3A championship this coming season.
Last year’s top scorer with 28 goals, Rainee Brito returns for her sophomore season. Brito was named honorable mention on the Nevada State Soccer Team. Junior Ally Wright adds a scoring punch to the Lady Dawg lineup. Other returnees from 2017 who were instrumental in the Dawgs 11-7-4 season are Karla Correa, Sarah Walters, Paola Garcia and Destiny Jimenez should add stability to Trimmings young squad.
Last year, three other freshman including Ally Shaner, Zoey Tobler and Jayde Tafili who were called up late in the season to help out for injured players.
When asked what type of play to expect from his Bulldog team, Trimming said, ”We will operate like a professional ‘club’ team. There is no seniority, freshman to seniors will compete weekly and kids will move between JV to Varsity squads possibly weekly.
“My philosophy on the game is one word, possession. We will control the ball and the game. Our defense will start with the strikers and end with the goalkeeper.”
The Lady Dawgs open preseason play on Aug. 28, hosting an always strong Pahrump Valley team at 5:30 p.m. at the soccer complex. The annual Mesquite Cup Soccer Tournament begins on Aug. 31.
Participants have not been named as of yet. All games will be held at the complex.
