A concert harpist and a seven-string electric violinist will join the Cliffrose Chamber Music series to perform a wide range of music.

Cliffrose’s final concert of the season will be performed at the Mesquite Community Theatre at 2 PM on April 29. The concert is titled “Begin the Beguine,” which is one of the Cole Porter tunes that the quartet is performing that afternoon. Other dance tunes and quartet classics will be performed by the Cliffrose String Quartet.

Cliffrose cellist Brent Pettit says, “The April 29th concert will feature some rare performances on some very interesting instruments.

“It’s not just every day that you’ll hear pieces by Stevie Wonder and Andrew Lloyd Weber played by a harp soloist,” says Pettit. St. George harpist Janet Anthony-Clark will play her own arrangements on a large, concert-sized harp unaccompanied at the April 29 performance.

“Janet was a soloist at the St. George Bach Festival last spring,” says Pettit. “She is well known in Southern Utah and the greater Las Vegas area for her creative arrangements of favorite melodies for the harp.” Besides playing popular tunes, Janet will play Claude Debussy’s “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair,” an icon from the French Impressionist era, and pieces written by the formost harpist of the early 20th Century, Carlos Salzedo.

“We will also be favored with music played on a seven-string electric violin,” says Pettit. “Cliffrose violist, Barry Bowers, will transition from his viola to a seven-string electric violin, playing a variety of music ranging from modern classical pieces and hymn tunes. He will accompany himself. Mr. Bowers has synthesized his own electronic back-up music, and has performed his synthesized arrangements throughout the U.S. and Brazil.” Barry recently performed Joel Jacklich’s “Rondo in A Minor” with the Southern Nevada Symphony, where his expert musical interpretation of this very challenging viola concerto captivated a very enthusiastic audience. Our April 29 concert will give our area music lovers an opportunity to hear Mr. Bowers interpret electronic music arranged by himself.”
