Some were wearable, others were art, but all of the entries in the “Best Decorated Hat and Head” contest and auction served to raise money for scholarships to local students.
With the Virgin Valley Artists Association sponsoring the contest at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery, the auction was held Thursday, Feb. 22, during the gallery’s monthly artist reception, “Reflections,” sponsored by the Mesquite Local News.
Sun City Crafting Club members won the judged contest with a hat and head decorated simply yet elegantly with flowers and a painted black head. Winners were determined by judges, prices for the hats were determined by gallery guests in a silent auction.
The VVAA also announced the winners of the February art exhibit “Reflections.” Charyn McDonnell won the Sponsor’s Choice award for her digital photo “Yellow Car Reflection” that was taken at the Mesquite Car Show. Dave Hammaker won both second Place and People’s Choice with his digital photo titled “Haven Bay.” Carol Stenger took first place with her watercolor titled “Day of Reflection” which was sold before the reception as was winner Kathleen Ludwig’s Acrylic.
VVAA operates the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery through member volunteer efforts. Original art is displayed in the gallery and offered for sale.
The VVAA sponsors adult classes, operates a full-service pottery studio, and sponsors a series of free art classes for school-age children and free monthly classes for seniors. Numerous local businesses and individuals support to the organization through their generous donations and sponsorships.
