Thursday’s toe-tapping, hand-clapping finale of the current VVTG musical comedy, The Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On, had the crowd on their feet whistling, shouting and literally dancing in the aisles.  Director Glen Bjornson says there is something “spiritual” about the creative process, and without a doubt, his four leading ladies captured the spirit and fun of the rock ‘n roll sixties and seventies music scene.   For a city of its size, Mesquite has a large and  active arts community.  From this talent pool Bjornson mined four musical gems.  Set at two separate class reunions, former members of a high school girl band portrayed by Cathy Petus, Jan Casebolt, Karen Ransdell, and Francesca Fontaine reminisce their way through thirty sparkling numbers.  Each member of the troupe has the opportunity to showcase their vocal chops as they share stories of love lost and found, personal growth, family dynamics and friendship.  Vintage 60s and 70s costumes created by Marnie Bartolini, Patti Bjornson and Janet McDonald add to the visual fun, especially the glittering second act.  A comedy bit by the school janitor in the first act had the audience groaning in appreciation. The opening was postponed due to illness, so unfortunately this great show will have a limited run.  Evening performances are scheduled for February  9 and 10, with a matinee on February 11.  I had a wonderful time!  Be sure to get your tickets and share in the fun!
