Special Olympics Mesquite Chapter competed in the 2016 Southern Nevada Bowling Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Gold Coast Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
The team had 17 active athletes and 4 players who were unable to play due to a flat tire on their van heading to Vegas.
Head Coach Paul LeVan, Assistant Coach Mike Dorn, volunteers Dorothy Olsen, Tom Hemmerick, Brenda Bowler, team parents and the bus driver from Silver Rider Mesquite who donated the bus to transport the team to Las Vegas attended the tournament.
The team practiced at the Virgin River Casino Bowling center for 10 weeks then competed against other Special Olympics teams from Las Vegas and Pahrump. After opening ceremonies, the athletes competed in two games of singles. Following lunch, the athletes took part in the doubles competition.
The Mesquite team athletes won a lot of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals this year. They look forward to next year’s bowling competition with practice starting the last Saturday in August 2017.
The next team sport competition will be basketball at the Mesquite Rec Center in mid-January with a basketball tournament in Las Vegas in March.
The annual Snow Flake ball will be held at the Eureka Casino on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. where everyone will celebrate the past year with awards to the athletes, their parents and to thank all who donate or contribute to the local program.
