A public relations firm for which Congressional District 4 Democratic candidate Ruben Kihuen has been employed has received an FBI subpoena for records related to a probe of a Las Vegas city councilman, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper.

The investigation into the handling of campaign funds by Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow has resulted in a subpoena for records from the Ramirez Group, the firm’s attorney confirmed to the newspaper.

The Ramirez Group is operated by Jacki and Andres Ramirez, both former aides to retiring U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, who has endorsed Kihuen in his race against incumbent Republican Cresent Hardy. The district covers part of northern Clark County, the southern part of Lyon County and all of White Pine, Nye, Mineral, Esmeralda, and Lincoln counties.

A federal financial disclosure report said Kihuen received a salary of $55,846 from the company in 2015, though he took a leave of absence to serve as state senator in the Legislature and is currently on leave while running for Congress.

A campaign spokesman for Kihuen told the Las Vegas newspaper Kihuen has no knowledge of the FBI investigation.

Andes Ramirez has contributed $2,700 to the Kihuen campaign and the campaign has paid the Ramirez Group more than $2,000 for various services, according to Federal Election Commission records.

An attorney for Barlow told the newspaper that FBI agents were looking at his campaign contributions and investigating potential violations of the federal “honest services” law. Barlow reportedly paid the Ramirez Group $70,000 in consulting fees this past year.
