On Sunday, May 29, during the nighttime hours, Mesquite police responded to a residential neighborhood to investigate complaints of a male knocking on the front doors of homes while yelling and being vulgar. Officers located the male standing outside of a home and attempted to make contact with him.

The male refused to answer their questions and kept attempting to remove an item from his back pocket. The suspect then attempted to flee, but the officers were able to quickly stop him and safely take him into custody.

Inside the suspect’s rear pocket, officers located a large spring-loaded knife. The officers also located a large amount of crystal meth and a meth pipe in the suspect’s front pockets. While officers were transporting the suspect, he was able to break a vehicle door by kicking it. The suspect also attempted to repeatedly kick and head-butt the officers.

Shelton Smith, 26, of St George Utah, was arrested and charged with: One felony count of trafficking a controlled substance (meth), one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon other than a firearm, one gross misdemeanor count of battery on a police officer, one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, one misdemeanor count of damage to jail property, and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith was transported and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on the felony charges.MethWeapon-06-02-16
