This year there were 15 special athletes out for basketball. So, instead of one team, like last year, they split their athletes into two teams. The green team, the Bull Dawgs, and the white team, the Bull Frogs, each played two games throughout the day.
The green team coach was Mike Dorn and his players were Jered Naccarrato, Robert Howard, Nick Verrerno, Denton Dorn, Raymundo Loya, Nathan Abrams and Ramon Preciado. The green team won their first game 26 to 20 over the Henderson team.
The white team coaches were Paul LeVan and Mike Dorn with players Jeff Hughes, Brook Teeples,
Diego Gutierrez, Dana Benson, Tammy Alexander, Shon Kelly and Daniel Jensen. They lost their first game 16-18 on a last second shot from an excited Las Vegas Spartan team.
After lunch the green team once again played strong with balanced scoring from all team members and won Gold Medals for their effort during the day.
The white team won their second game 30 to 26 with Jeff Hughes scoring 14 points and they tied for second place, receiving silver medals with a team from the Las Vegas area.
All the athletes had a good day and want to thank Silver Rider and bus driver Tom for the bus that transported them to Las Vegas. They would also like to thank the Mesquite Rec Center for our basketball practice facility during the winter months; the caregivers, Tina Godbe and Lanae Barnum from the Danville Group Home; caregiver Terell with Diego; and especially our super-duper volunteer ladies, Charlie Boope, Jeri Hall, Dorothy Olsen and Debbie Dorn.
The next competition for their athletes will be Bocce Ball Competition with practices starting on March 19 at the Senior Center and then Sun City Bocce Ball courts. The Bocce Ball tournament will be held in Las Vegas on April 23.
