It looked like a Bulldog blowout early in Friday’s B.I.T. opener against Sierra Vista High School. The Dawgs led 9-1 early behind eight points by Brianna Todd increasing their lead to 16-4 after one period of play against the Mountain Lions. The final whistle blew with the Dawgs barely hanging on for a 52-50 win. Although never trailing, the Dawgs allowed the Mountain Lions to creep back into the game committing 20 plus turnovers the rest of the way. The Mountain Lions went on a 15-0 run before the Dawgs stopped the bleeding. The Dawgs still held a 26-19 advantage after one half of play. Leading the Dawgs in scoring were Todd with eight points and Bernice Fiso with six. Fiso kept the Dawgs on top with great board play on both ends of the court.
The Lady Dawgs held a 41-33 lead after three periods of play. Emma Barnum exerted herself into the game with seven points followed by Fiso with four points. The Dawgs continued to lead 51-41 with 2:47 left in the game before the Lions scored seven straight points to cut the Dawgs lead to 51-48 with 24 seconds remaining. The Mountain Lions forced a Bulldog turnover resulting in a layup making the score 51-50 with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Barnum was fouled resulting in two free throws. Barnum missed the first but hit the second giving the Dawgs the lead at 52-50. A wild shot by the Mountain Lions ended the game. Fiso led the Dawgs with 16 points, four blocks and numerous layups followed by Barnum with 14 points. Todd had eight points early but was in foul trouble the rest of the way. The Dawgs will face the winner of the later Dixie High School-Tech game Saturday afternoon at 1pm. The Flyers from Dixie led by double digits early in their late game against the Roadrunners.
