Southeast Career Technical Academy (SECTA) also known as the TECH Roadrunners hoped to outrun and gun the Bulldogs from Virgin Valley High School fell short Thursday night falling to the Dawgs by a score of 82-58. The Roadrunners had no answer for the Bulldogs full court press as they were forced into numerous turnovers by a swarming Dawg Defense. “We wanted to put on a show for the hometown crowd and get a league win,” said Bulldog coach Sean FitzSimons. “Keeping the pressure and intensity high but having patience on our shots worked well.”
The Dawgs pressing defense led to quick scores on layups to give the Dawgs an 18-9 lead after one quarter of play. Nick Cox and Andrew Memmott split the Roadrunner defense for easy baskets.
The Bulldogs showed they could hit from anywhere on the court as Zach Barnum hit two threes in a row followed by threes from Cox and Marcus Saunders to give the Dawgs a 33-13 advantage early in the second period. Bulldog Hogan Fowles quick release added up to six points for the Dawgs. Barnum, Fowles and Saunders had six points each to lead the Dawgs in the period to a 46-26 advantage. Saunders had 10 points followed by Barnum with 8 to lead the Dawg onslaught.
The Bulldogs did not let up to begin the second half as they raced out to 58-28 lead three minutes into the third period. Saunders received a huge roar from the Bulldog faithful with a steal and a huge dunk. Barnum added another three ball and 7 points to lead a well balanced scoring attack giving the Dawgs an insurmountable 72-39 advantage at the end of three periods.
The third period was anti climatic as the Dawgs reserves were outscored 19-10 by the Roadrunners making the final score 82-58 in favor of the home team. “We were looking for each other and kept the pressure on for a whole game. The kids did not let down,” added FitzSimons. The Bulldogs had five players in double figures including Barnum with 15, Memmott with 13, Saunders with 14 and Cox and Fowles with 12 points each. The Bulldogs will have a tougher test Friday Dec. 11 as they host the BIT. The Dawgs will face Kanab (Utah) at 6pm in the opening game.
