On Saturday, Nov. 21, local Boy Scout Troops collected bags of food from throughout the community as part of their annual food drive. The supplies were then brought to the Salvation Army of Mesquite’s office at 355 W. Mesquite Blvd. Suite B50. The bags had been distributed earlier in the week before by local Cub Scouts. Once the items were brought to the office on Saturday, the Girl Scout Troop sorted the food out and placed it on shelves for easy access.
According to Coordinator Roberta Franco, the total food brought in was 8,050 pounds of non-perishable items. “This was a great community effort to help with our community’s problem of hunger. More usable food was given this year as there was not as much expired food products that we have received in previous years,” Franco said.
In addition to this, the Salvation Army also received 500 pounds of food from their two-day designation at the 19th Annual Festival of Trees that was held at the CasaBlanca Events Tent Nov. 18-21.
I’m happy to see the amount of food that was gathered by the Boy Scouts, however, we put our bag out on the 20th, and it is still sitting at the door today. I hope that we were just missed by accident, and that our whole neighborhood didn’t miss the pickup of donated items. Keep up the great work!
