The Eureka Community Initiative project known as Mesquite Reads received two hefty donations at the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Gerri Chasko, Initiative director for the Eureka Casino accepted a check for $4,600 from the Maddie Wilcox, President of the Sunrise Rotary.
Chasko also accepted a $1,513 check from Ken Cook, Chamber President that was raised at the recent Mesquite Library book sale.
Mesquite Reads is a summertime program that aims to boost the reading skills of local elementary school kids and enable them to read at grade level by the third grade. It began three years ago through the Eureka Community Initiative at the Virgin Valley Elementary School. Chasko announced on Wednesday that the program will expand to the Bowler Elementary School this summer. “That will cost more money so these donations are very helpful,” Chasko remarked.
The Sunrise Rotary also donated $1,750 to Virgin Valley High School counselor Christy Davis who will use the funds to help high school students offset expenses associated with various activities.
Cook announced the Chamber’s Board of Directors for 2016 at the luncheon. Remaining on the Board are Colleen Angel, Keith Burkhalter, and Noel Smith. New members include Dave Ballweg, Dave Bennett, Jayne Kendrick, Kathy Lee, Kathy Poindexter, and Roberta Franco.
