The largest soccer crowd of the season witnessed a good hard fought soccer match between two good soccer programs as the Bulldogs shut out the Pirates 2-0 Tuesday night at the Mesquite Sports and Events Center. Highlighting ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ the Bulldogs came out with pink uniforms. It was a tough night for the Moapa Valley girls as their coach was not available due to a family emergency. The first few minutes of the match found the teams testing their defenses until 7 minutes in when Bulldog forward Abbie Barnum struck goal on an amazing corner kick giving the Dawgs a 1-0 advantage. Neither team could strike goal the rest of the first half. The Dawgs had eight attempts but could not find the net. As in recent games the Bulldog defensive back line played well giving the ball back to their offense numerous times. “We need to be ready because they will be coming after us,” said Bulldog Coach Bob Snell prior to the game. “Our defense has to step up once again”

The second half was a duplicate of the first as the Dawg defense continued to control the field giving the offense the opportunity to score. Bulldog forward Barnum left the game at the 52 minute mark with a yellow card and did not return until the 62 minutes. The Bulldogs were awarded a direct kick right outside the box. Marlene Quiarte’s attempt was headed by Kallie Graves to Barnum for her second goal of the night. The Dawgs ended up with 11 shots on goal to the Pirates 5 shots. Goalkeeper Spencer green registered her sixth shutout of the season. “It was a big win for us, anytime you beat Moapa it’s huge,” added Snell. The Bulldog win ties the Lady Dawgs with Sunrise Mountain for second place in Sunrise League play with 4-1-1 records. The Dawgs travel to Boulder City this Thursday and host Sunrise Mountain on October 12.
