The Desert Dames monthly luncheon was held on June 24th at the Redd Room at the Oasis Club House.  Members enjoyed a delicious lunch with Chicken Angelo, salad and dessert.  With so many members out of town in search of cooler weather, the luncheons are not held during the months of July and August.  We’ll all look forward to getting together again in September.

Our luncheons normally include musical entertainment or a guest speaker.  This month we were honored to have two officers from the Mesquite Police Department speak to us on the scams that are currently going around.  Sergeant Mike Van Houten and Detective Gary Erickson took time from their busy day to enlighten our group about telephone and internet scams.  It seems that modern-day criminals have become very creative in the ways they try to separate us from our money.  The most helpful information is simply that before giving money to someone that claims to be from a utility company, the IRS, a credit card company, etc, is to hang up and call the company to confirm if you owe them money.  The other scams claim that you’ve won a large amount of money, but before you can collect it you must prepay the taxes.  Just remember the old saying, “if it sounds too good to be true, it is”.  We all enjoyed the officers sharing this valuable information with us.

The Desert Dames promote friendship through meetings, social functions and special interest groups.  Anyone at least 21 years of age who lives in Mesquite and surrounding areas can join.  For more information call our Membership Chair Debbie Oskin at (702) 346-0811.
