Mesquite’s Virgin Valley Little League will open their third season of play on April 6 at various parks throughout the city.

It has been an amazing growth period for the league which began with 11 teams and approximately 140 children in 2012. The initial year was co-ed with all kids playing baseball. Initial planning for the league began at our local Elks Lodge three years ago. Members of the community came together and formed a Board of Directors which oversees the operation of the league. Enthusiasm for the league grew in the second year as VVLL expanded to 17 teams with 195 children participating in baseball and softball.

This year’s season of the VVLL has an amazing 35 teams competing, including nine teams from the Moapa Valley, and over 400 kids total. What is truly amazing is how community businesses, fraternaties and individuals have stepped forward as sponsors, coaches, umpires and volunteers to make this such a huge success.

A schedule of weekly games will be printed in the Mesquite Local News sports page. There is also a special sports section online at www.mesquitelocalnews.com dedicated to VVLL news and schedules.

There will be an opening ceremony at the Old Mill ball fields at 5 p.m. with local and Little League officials in attendance. The first games of the season begin shortly thereafter.

**The full schedule will be posted later today, Tuesday, March 31.**
