Bill Schnick beat his age by nine shots and in the process upset Jon Hawkins by two shots.  Schnick, from the forward tees, once again proved he is to be reckoned with for medalist honors.  Today he shot a steady 37-38-75 for low honors.  He beat favorite Jon Hawkins who was having his own battle with J.P. LaLiberte.   LaLiberte battled Hawkins for16 holes.  Both players had a birdie on the front side matching 37’s.  LaLiberte would tie Hawkins on the 10th hole with a nice birdie 4.  Hawkins retook the lead with a par five on the 12th hole.  LaLiberte won holes 13 and 14 but Hawkins would win holes 15, 16, 17 to beat his playing partner by one shot. What a great match!   Lew Roney played his best round in awhile lighting up the front side with two birdies for 37 followed with a 42 on the back for 79 and the low net for the day of 65.  Two shots back was Clark Mitchell (82) and 67.  Laliberte’s net 69 took third place with a bogey, bogey, par while Bubba Petrick(85) and net 69 shot bogey, bogey, bogey for fourth.  Aaron Kennard (85) and net 71 was tied with John Sabraw(94).  Kennard took 5th with a bogey while Sabraw triple bogeyed the 13th hole. You might say it was preparation day for the MMGA at the Canyons golf course for next week’s annual Mesquite Cup Challenge.  For one member it was a great day as Paul LeVan recorded his second hole in one.  He used a nine iron on the par three 9th hole  landing some eight feet away and rolling straight into the jar.  Great shot Paul and Smitty says it has to be the shot of the day.  Oh, by the way, everyone thanks you for the libations afterwards.  In case you are interested, Le Van shot a pair of 41’s.  Tim Miller also had a nice round coming off a little surgery as he shot 38-39-77 for medalist honors.  Two shots back were Ken Ward 40-39-79 and J.P. LaLiberte 39-40-79.  Ward’s par four on the first handicap hole awarded him second low gross.   Jim Naccarato moved up to the gold tees to practice for next week and may like it up there as he shot 39-43-82 and tied Jim Anderson, who had his best side ever on the front with a birdie on the ninth hole for a 38.  He did not fair as well on the back shooting a total 90 but it tied Naccarato’s net 65.  Naccarato’s “sweet” birdie three on the 7th hole robbed Anderson of first place low net.  Aaron Kennard (81) had a net 66 for third.  Bill Irace (80) earned 4th with his net 67.  Roger Mueller (81) placed 5th with a net 68 and Tom Durenberger (83) got the last spot with his net 69.  Frank Vandeweghe had the best nine holes as he shot a one over par 36 on the front nine.  In all, seven of the nine pay off places were won by forward tee players.  It’s the sign of the times as more and more players become eligible to move up and enjoy the game again.

The next scheduled play is the MESQUITE CUP PLAY on Tuesday, Feb 24 at Canyons at 8:00 and Wednesday  Feb 25 at Falcon Ridge at 8:00.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 346-6363.  Also check out our website at
