Paul LeVan will be the first to admit that he played his best round at the always tough Falcon Ridge golf course in many years.  Tuesday it was for the MMGA 2015 President’s Cup.  With birdies on 3, 5 and 9 he recorded a nice even par 35.  This was no easy feat playing with the two top MMGA players, Andrew Yeh and Jon Hawkins the club champion who himself put pressure on Le Van with his own superb round of one under par 34 with birdies on one and five.  But lingering in the back of his mind was “nice front side” but will my normal crash on the back happen again today.  Not this day.  He played superbly with one bogey on the back side for a one over par 38 and 73 to win the cup.  Hawkins tried to stay with LeVan but he could not recover from a double bogey start on the 10th hole and shot 41 for a nice round of 75 but it wasn’t good enough this day.  Dave Jordan playing in the next foursome also recorded a nice 18-hole round of 38-39-77 for third place.  Jordan’s net 67 got his name on the cup for low net of the tournament.  The shots of the day were in the Jordan foursome.  Jordan was a few feet of the 13th green and chose to putt from the fringe down a slope to a cup some fifty feet away. He putted and dropped the long putt in the hole for a very “sweet” birdie three.  As he took the ball out of the cup he smelled a “chicken dinner” better known as a “skin”.  His playing partner, Jason Richmond was standing over his ball on the back of the green some eighty feet from the front cup.  Richmond stroked the putt.  Both players watched the down hill huge left to right break roll up to the jar and drop in for a fabulous birdie on top of Jordan’s birdie to rob him of his imagined dinner.  Just fantastic birdies guys which may never be duplicated again.  Here are the results of the other fights:

Andrew Yeh firing birdies on holes 1, 4 and 7, shot a one under par 34 on the front side of the Palms golf course on Thursday.  He added two more on the back on holes 10, 14 for a 38 on his way to taking back medalist honors from Paul Le Van and Jon Hawkins. Afterwards as he was totaling up the skins game he could be heard out on the patio, “I get five birdies and no skins, I get five birdies and no skins”. No one seemed to care. His playing partner Hawkins had an average day of 40-36-76 for second place.  Ed Hoepfner with a pair of 40’s for 80 came in third low gross.  The battle this day was for the net payoffs as it is most days. Today it was the number 71.  But first we have to break the tie for first low net between Manny Lira (90) and Gary Denhalter (84) tied at net 68.  It was over on the first handicap hole, number 4, when Lira double bogeyed and gave it to Denhalter with a bogey six.  The following players had net 71’s.  Ed Hoepfner (80), Willie Nelson (88), Rod Norrish (86) and Paul Le Van (80).  Hoepfner easy won third with his par on the first handicap hole.  Nelson scored bogey, bogey to take the 4th spot.  The fifth was not that easy as Norrish would earn it after bogeying the first four holes and LeVan double bogeyed the fourth handicap hole.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Feb 3 at Falcon Ridge at 7:50 and Thursday Feb 5 at the CasaBlanca  at 8:30.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 702-346-6363.  Also check out our website at
