Lady Bulldogs second half rally drops Miners 41-31
Tuesday night’s basketball game between the Lady Bulldogs and Sunrise Mountain High School was a difficult game to watch for basketball fans. Neither team wanted to take control of the ball as mistakes reduced the game to a chaotic pace for three periods of play before Bulldog Spencer Green took charge and scored 12 of her game high 14 points in the second half. Center Kourtney Metzger kept the Dawgs in the game in the first period hitting for five points early to give the Dawgs a 7-6 lead. Metzger had four of her game high seven blocks which intimidated the Miners shooters.
The Bulldogs managed only 8 points in the second quarter led by Bernice Fiso’s four points in the paint. The Bulldogs led 11-6 before point guard Emma Barnum received her third foul four minutes in and sat the rest of the half. The Miners rallied to tie the game at 15-15 going into the break. “We need to keep #’s 11 and 12 (Spencer and Green) in the game to give us continuity,” said Bulldog coach Chimane Creer. “Green took over and forced a fast break against the tenacious Miner press.”
Green woke up the Bulldog offense hitting three straight jumpers in the paint to give the Dawgs a 26-21 lead after three periods of play. Metzger added three points and her presence in the paint forced wayward shots by the Miners guards. Green added 6 more points in the final period leading the Bulldogs fast break. The Dawgs increased their lead to win going away 41-31. The win kept the Dawgs in first place in Sunrise League play with a 4-0 record.
The Dawgs will have to cut down on turnovers if they have any hope in beating a quick Chaparral squad in Las Vegas Thursday night. The Cowboys led Tech 41-4 before pulling their starters in the second period in a 48-24 win.
