TUESDAY: FOUR WAY TIE AT 69 FOR LOW NET
Jon the “hawk” Hawkins and Andrew Yeh had a great match at Falcon Ridge on Tuesday. The two started on the par three 17th hole. The tone was set early when Hawkins went par, par and Yeh scored bogey, double bogey and the hand writing may have been on the wall when on the third hole, the par five number one Yeh took a double bogey and Hawkins birdied for a six stroke lead. Yeh fought back with a 39 to Hawkins 37 after the ninth hole. Yeh actually birdied holes 12, 14 and 16 and shot even par 37 on the back but came up one shot back as Hawkins shot a one over par 38 to win medalist by one shot. J.P. LaLiberte came in third with his round of 80. But the story of the day was in the net groupings. No less than four players tied for first place low net with 69. Yeh (76), Jim Guttridge (84), Gary Denhalter (87) and Aaron Kennard (84) shared that honor. Denhalter bowed out first with a triple bogey on hole 13 and took and dropped to fourth. Kennard was next with his bogey and earned third. Yeh and Guttridge with their nice par fours went back to the front side on the second handicap hole where Yeh’s par earned him first place low net and Guttridge landed in second. Don Mannon, from the forward tees, with a nice 39 on the front shot 85 and net 70 for the fifth spot. Frank Thomasino (82) won 6th place with his double bogey on 13, as Ray Rodgers (91) and net 71 faltered on same hole.
In recognition of the start of the NCAA basketball season the MMGA teed it up at the Palms golf course for a “Nothing but NET” tournament. The title would mean all winners would be decided by net scores. Really! The first flight was won by Lew Roney with a 39-42-81 and net 68. It was his best round ever in Mesquite. Second went to new member Rod Norrish(87) and net 74. Third was won by Ed Hoepfner (86) and a net 75, with the tie breaker over Frank Thomasino (84). Second flight was won by Jim Naccarato trying the forward tees and liking it with his rounds of 42 for 84 and a net 67. Second was awarded to Gary Denhalter (86) and net 69. Bubba Petrick (95) broke a tie with Russs Clark (92) at net 75 to win third. In the third flight John Sabraw shot a pair of 46’s for a net of 69 to win first place. Ray Rodgers (91) netted out at 73 and won second. Jim Anderson (96) moving up to the forward tees was rewarded with a net 76 and third place.
