Over 300 youth participated in the Elks Soccer Shoot on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Mesquite Recreation Center soccer fields. Dallin Avertt, 5, was one of the first to attack the soccer goal-shooting contest. At first he was a little shy, but after shooting a couple of practice balls, his confidence swelled and he attacked the 15-ball challenge like the star soccer player he always dreamed about becoming.
As the soccer games that were being played at the same time came to an end, dozens of players swarmed the event. Not one to suffer from shyness, 8 year old Luke Olsen approached the challenge with unfaltering seriousness. As ball after ball entered the target goals, he displayed the confidence of a seasoned soccer player, and made his father, Scott Olsen, and little sister, Ella, 3, who were looking on, proud of his accomplishment.
Each year, the Mesquite Elks Lodge #2811 sponsors the Soccer Shoot as a way to encourage young people to exercise, test their soccer shooting skills, and enjoy the outdoors. The participants competed with other players in their own age groups and learned new skills by testing the own abilities and by watching others.
The Mesquite Elks wish to thank all of the coaches and parents who encouraged their children to participate in this fun day of soccer. Anyone interested in joining the Elks Lodge and who wish to volunteer in the many events sponsored by the Elks can call (702) 345-2811 for further information.
