Local young people wanting to become certified as lifeguards must attend classes.

The Mesquite Department of Athletics & Leisure Services, which operates the swimming pools at the Mesquite Recreation Center, has set up special times and dates with the St. George (Utah) Aquatics Division to provide a lifeguard training class. The class will run Monday through Friday, April 14-18, which coincides with the Clark County School District’s spring break.

To attend the class, individuals must be able to complete a 300-yard swim using the free-style stroke, breaststroke, tread water for two minutes without using hands and retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 10 feet of water. The swimming tests will be held the first day of class. The deadline to register is March 29. There is a cost to register. Contact the St. George Aquatics Division, (435)-627-4585, for cost, class times and direction to the Sand Hollow Aquatics Center. Class is limited to 15 students.
