Sherman R. Frederick/Properly Subversive

In a previous column, I raised the hope that Nevada’s senior U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Mastos might be in a perfect position to lead her party out of the current crisis on the Mexican border.

Sherman Frederick

Ms. Cortez Mastos’ grandfather immigrated from Mexico to better himself and his family. And, he did. His son, Manny, grew up to become a local politician and a mover and a shaker in the blow-and-go years of Las Vegas tourism. His granddaughter – Ms. Cortez-Mastos – won election to the U.S. senate, replacing the legendary Sen. Harry Reid. Nice story, right?

Now comes an even more powerful and a more modern-day immigration story into the senator’s life.

At 4:30 a.m. on April 6 in Reno, an immigrant who crossed our border illegally at Rio Grande City, Texas, slammed his car into Kurt Englehart’s car and knocked the life out of him.

Mr. Englehart was a longtime campaign official for Ms. Cortez Mastos. According to page posted by staff following the crash, Kurt Englehart “proudly served Nevada and the country in the office and campaign of Senator Cortez Masto. A beloved figure across the state, Kurt was always eager to help a constituent at a moment’s notice. He touched many lives.”

The other driver – Elmer Rueda-Linares, pictured above – was three sheets to the wind. Police say he failed to stop at the scene, which means (I’m reading between the lines of reports here) that he also rendered no aid. Mr. Rueda-Linares was taken to Washoe County Jail where he was held on $100,000 bail. Federal agents have filed an “immigration detainer” on Mr. Rueda-Linares.

Obviously, this has shaken the senator and her staff. To lose a colleague, especially like this, is hard to bear. If anything good comes of it, may I suggest this tragedy lead to a turnaround in Ms. Cortez Mastos’ position on immigration.

To date, Ms. Cortez Mastos has been little more than a get-along Democrat for President Joe Biden’s immigration policy. She’s watched some 9 million people flood across the border illegally since Mr. Biden took office – and said nothing to effect change.

In fact in a twist of fate on March 10, 2021, just two days before Kurt Englehart’s killer illegally crossed the Mexican border, Ms. Cortez Mastos told the far left news organization MSNBC that there was “a lot of misinformation” surrounding the Mexican border crisis and claimed the Mexican border is not open, as President Biden critics claim.

“As someone who was attorney general (of Nevada) for eight years, my state worked very closely on the border with Mexico. There are no open borders.”

As the senator and her staff go through the process of grieving the loss of Kurt Englehart, I hope they separate themselves from the herd of Democrats who look the other way pretending not to see what is actually happening at our southern border.

No more denying reality. The raw fact is Kurt Englehart was among us on April 5. He was gone one on April 6, thanks to a person who should not have been here.

No other way to see it.

CANNIBALS ATE MY UNCLE

Another week on the campaign trail for President Joe Biden … another strange story from the mouth of the leader of the free world.

This one, I don’t think anyone could make up.

On Wednesday, April 17, Joe Biden visited a war memorial and told this story about his uncle who was during WWII shot down over New Guinea:

“He flew single-engine planes, reconnaissance flights over New Guinea. He had volunteered because someone couldn’t make it. He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals in New Guinea at the time. They never recovered his body.”

The next day, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had to admit that while Mr. Biden’s maternal uncle, Ambrose Finnegan, did die when his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean; he was not eaten by cannibals.

Notably, the White House had nothing to say about escalating tensions in the Middle East. It continues to tell us the economy is doing grrrreat! Vladimir Putin is to blame for the high price of gasoline. Trump caused the wide open southern border, which, by the way, is completely secure.

But it did take time to debunk the Cannibals Ate My Uncle story.

ONE MORE THING

Can  the “Dingos Ate My Baby!” story be far behind?
