Blood Donors: Spare an Hour to Save Lives in August  

Vitalant thanks all donors with $10 gift card and a chance to win $10,000 

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (July 30, 2025) — Nonprofit Vitalant urges all eligible donors to take an hour to give blood amidst the August hustle of summer fun and back-to-school activities. That’s all the time it takes to help ensure a readily available blood supply so patients don’t face treatment delays. All donors who give Aug. 1-28 and are opted in to Vitalant Donor Rewards will get a $10 gift card and a chance to win one of three $10,000 gift cards in the Summer Gas Giveaway*.

Donors of all blood types are vital to helping patients, especially those with type O and platelet donors. Type O donors can help most patients in emergencies. Platelet donors are also in high demand. Platelets are often used to help cancer patients and are critical in stopping bleeding.

Kathy Leikam is in remission after needing a series of monthly blood transfusions due to pure red blood cell aplasia, a rare disorder that left her feeling constantly tired. Blood transfusions provided her immediate relief from her symptoms.

“Had it not been for all the people that donate blood I would not be here today,” Leikam said. “I am so blessed!”
