Mesquite Monthly

The 18th annual Mesquite Western Roundup will have a new home this year. This locally popular show will grace the stage of the Virgin Valley High School Theater at 820 Valley View Drive, on Feb. 21 and 22.

Russ Westwood was as much fun to watch as he was to listen to while performing cowboy poetry at the Mesquite Western Roundup on Feb. 19 and 20 at the Mesquite Community Theatre. Westwood along with the other cowboy poets sit around the chuck wagon and share their tales just as true cowboys do. Photo by Teri Nehrenz.

This theater is capable of seating many more people than the community theater, so organizers hope that no one will be turned away. Please plan on coming and filling the seats.

It is always a fun evening. This year’s show is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 21 and 1 p.m. on Feb. 22.

Kenny B, the piano guy, will provide the pre show music as you enter the theater. Many have heard Kenny play locally and have marveled at his repertoire. Leo Black, another local man, will be this year’s Master of Ceremonies. Black still dabbles in cattle ranching, and we will depend upon his good humor and speaking skills to guide us through the evening.

Robin Arnold will be this year’s featured musical entertainment.

One-time resident of Mesquite, Arnold grew up in Roy, Utah. He has been singing and reciting cowboy poetry for over 45 years.

His versatile performances include special tributes to artists like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley.

At this year’s Mesquite Western, Roundup he will do his very special tribute to Marty Robbins.

The Mesquite Western Poets will take to the stage to provide their insights, reflections and accounts of various aspects of western life.

Returning this year, Farrell Bott will bring his many years of on-the-range experience to the stage.

BT Buckland, using his involvement with cowboy action shooting as inspiration, will present some of his poetry.

Having spent many years on an Idaho ranch, Steve Campbell will regale the group with verse from his past.

Jim Parsons will return with a couple of new poems written just for this program.

Kathy Smith will once again delve into to her family’s pioneer past for her presentation.

Russ Westwood, the longest standing poet in the Mesquite Western Roundup, will present the style that won him the championship buckle at the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo.

Each year the group receives comments that the show was even better than the year before. Organizers invite everybody to come to see if this will once again prove to be true.

Tickets are $15 per person and are available online at event.eventgroove.com/event/Mesquite-Western-Roundup-104793 or at Daniel’s Chocolates and IKA Greens. Tickets will also be sold at the theater box office one hour before the show for cash only.  Perhaps the easiest way to obtain tickets in advance is to visit mesquitewesternpoets.com and use the link on that site.
