It’s no secret that an amazing model train layout can make it more fun to run train
operations. From the highlands to the prairies, unique model landscapes are easy to
make if you have to right tools. Learn how to make a canyon layout for your model
train.

Plan the Layout
The first step is the planning stage. Measure your train so you know how tall it
is—including track height for tunnel clearances—and how wide the widest car is.
Then, mark the path you want to make with your track pieces on your surface. A
piece of plywood works well as a base.

Build Up Height
The fastest way to build tall canyon walls and pillars is with XPS insulation foam and
a hot wire cutter. A hot wire cutter is easily one of the top five tools for model
railroading since it makes sculpting hillsides and cliffs quick and easy. All you have
to do is stack up pieces of foam, glue them together, and carve them with your wire
cutter.

Seal Pieces and Add Texture
To get a rocky, dirt-like texture all over your layout, you’ll want to mix baking soda,
paint, and Mod Podge. The baking soda creates texture, while the Mod Podge seals
the foam against water and oil from your hands. Add in your preferred paint color
and use this mix to cover your entire layout. Let it dry for at least a day.

Bonus Texture Tip
If you want more variation in your rock texture, don’t put the baking soda mix
everywhere. Instead, make a ball of aluminum foil and roll it over other areas to
make a different rock texture style. You will still need to cover those areas with a
layer of paint and Mod Podge.

Try Dry Brushing

Realistic-looking rocks are pretty easy to make. Get yourself a large stiff-bristled
brush and dip it in a paint that’s a lighter color than your base. Remove almost all of
the paint on the brush with a paper towel, then brush the tops of the rocks to create
layers of color. Do this with as many mid-tones and highlights as you want until you
like the results.

Decorate With Scenery
Once everything is dry, you can start adding in tufts of wiry grasses, cacti, and
whatever foliage you think looks realistic. You can even add buildings and figures if
you like.
That’s it! We hope you enjoyed learning how to make a canyon layout for your model
train. Ultimately, you can use these techniques to create just about any kind of
landscape you want.
