The Beaver Dam High football season came to an end Thursday night with the Diamondbacks coming out on the short end of a 53-0 decision to 1A Southern League champion Spring Mountain at the Snake Pit.
The loss ends the D-Backs’ season at 2-6 overall and 0-5 in league play. Spring Mountain improved to 5-0 in league and 7-1 overall. The Eagles are a No. 1 seed for the playoffs that begin next week.
Beaver Dam, which fell to Indian Springs, 26-20, in double overtime the previous week, held its own against the talented Eagles in the first half. The D-backs trailed 26-0, but played much better than the score indicated.
Things quickly changed in the third quarter, however.
Spring Mountain scored early in the quarter on a 48-yard touchdown pass to up its lead to 32-0. Two plays, the Eagles had the ball back following a Beaver Dam interception. The Eagles scored on the next play, a 30-yard touchdown run, to increase its advantage to 39-0 with 8:09 left in the quarter.
The Eagles got the ball right back when the D-Backs mishandled the ensuing kickoff, giving Spring Mountain the ball on the Beaver Dam 29-yardline.
Six running plays later, the Eagles punched it in from a yard out to boost the margin to 45-0.
Spring Mountain closed out the scoring on a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown with 9:02 remaining in the contest.
The D-Backs threatened late by driving to Spring Mountain 35 on runs by Nate Vicuna, Cesar Soto and Tanner Reber. The drive stalled, however, and the Eagles took over on downs and ran out the clock.
Beaver Dam honored its four graduating seniors at halftime – Reber, Jose Avila, Isaac Ojeda and Brandon Santos.
