The Virgin Valley High School Bulldog football team cemented their hold on the top spot in the 3A Southern high school poll with a resounding 60-8 victory over Western High School Friday night Sept. 7 in Las Vegas. As in previous games, the Dawgs started strong but did not whither, as the game progressed. The Bulldogs came out strong with five different Dawgs contributing to the scoring with 28 points in the first period. Jake Hampstead got the scoring off on a 41 yard reception from Mebs Hollingshead. Bulldog workhorse Wyatt Delano went in from 4 yards out making the score 14-0 after 7:33 minutes of play. Two Bulldog reserves added a T.D. each to end the first period scoring. Cameron Noel went in from 4 yards out and Shawn Rodriquez added a one yard run. Tanner Shepard was perfect on points after kicks giving the Dawgs a 28-0 lead. The Dawgs continued to mount their attack as Hollingshead hit Koden Tietjen on a 27 yard strike, the PAT failed but the Dawgs led 34-0. Western countered with their only T.D. on a 66 yard dash by Jeramiah Towns cutting the Dawgs lead to 34-6. Bulldog Noel took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house upping the Dawgs lead to 41-6. The Dawgs would add one more T.D. before the first half clocked expired on a 41 yard scamper by running back Will Barnum giving the Dawgs a 48-6 lead at the break. The Bulldog defense was relentless as two interceptions set up T.D.’s   Bulldog coach Matt Woods substituted freely the rest of the half.

The Bulldogs added two more T.D.’ in the third and fourth periods as reserves finished the game. Delano scored on a 17 yard jaunt and Tietjen finished the scoring with a fumble return from 35 yards out. Delano, led Bulldog rushers with 138 yards on only 11 carries for two T.D.’ The Dawgs passing game was limited as Hollingshead went 2 for 6 for 66 yards. The Dawgs host 3A newcomer Democracy Prep on Sept. 14 in the Dawg Pound.
