The Virgin Valley High baseball team opened South 3-A Regional play with a 3-1 victory over visiting Western of Las Vegas Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

The victory sends the Bulldogs, 17-8-1 overall, into a winner’s bracket contest Wednesday afternoon at Pahrump Valley. Win or lose, VVHS will play again on Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.

The semifinals and championship games will be played Friday and Saturday at Whalen Field in Boulder City.

After giving up an unearned run in the top of the first inning, Virgin Valley starter Dakota Munford slammed the door shut on Western’s batters. The senior right-hander gave up just two hits, walked five and struck out four in 6.1 innings of work to get the win. Aiden Woods came on in relief to get the final two outs and record the save.

The Bulldogs scored single runs in the first, second and sixth inning while making the most of their five base hits.

Dillan Fuqua launched a solo home run, Cade Anderson doubled home a run and Kayden Peterson collected two hits and scored a run for the Bulldogs. Jayden Perkins scored a run and Booker Wakefield singled to aid the VVHS cause.

In Tuesday’s other first-round games, Pahrump Valley edged Tech, 4-3, Chaparral upset Desert Pines, 7-5, and Boulder City pounded Mojave, 20-5.
