Monday night’s weather was perfect for a baseball season opener.

The Virgin Valley Little League held its sixth season opener at Old Mill Park ballfields. Twenty two softball and baseball teams consisting of 232 athletes began play on April 2 with softball first up.

Mesquite children from 8-15 years of age get the opportunity to learn America’s pastime under the tutelage of volunteers and parents.

League President Dan Wright began the evening introducing Mesquite Veteran Honor Guard who posted the flag as Councilman Geno Withelder led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Deacon Gary from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and LDS President Anderson blessed the league and prayed for the children’s safety. Wright than introduced the VVLL Board of Directors, sponsors and coaches.

Mesquite Mayor Al Litman threw out the first pitch as Wright called for play ball.

Softball began play immediately with baseball kicking off on Tuesday April 3.

All games will be played at Old Mill and Pioneer Park ball fields.
