The creation of a special veteran’s area for the new Mesquite Cemetery was the topic of a meeting between Mayor Al Litman and representatives for Senator Dean Heller (R-NV). Attending the Jan. 8 meeting at City Hall from Senator Heller’s office was Scarlet Doyle, a legislative assistant based in Washington D.C. and Stephen Sifuentes, who is Senator Heller’s regional representative based in Las Vegas.
Mayor Litman is requesting the Senator’s assistance in securing federal funding for a special veteran’s section and monument in the new cemetery. Litman said “We have been working on this issue for some time,” and that the city would like federal support like that given recently to a cemetery in Ely.
Litman told Heller’s staff that unlike many areas Mesquite “has the land and we will give it to you for a veterans cemetery.” Both Doyle and Sifuentes indicated Heller’s support and desire to try and find funding. Litman praised the Senator saying he had received “good cooperation” to date on the effort.
The city has also approached the State of Nevada for assistance on the project, but so far has had little success. “We are not getting the results from the state even though they appointed a special veteran’s person.” Litman plans on continuing the city efforts at both the state and federal level.
The new cemetery, currently under construction, is located on Hardy Way west of Falcon Ridge Parkway.
Hold it- when was this cemetary ever brought up or approved by the city and council?
Anyone got dates and minutes?
So, now we as taxpayers are paying for this mormon make work program and if federal funds do not come thru,we the taxpayers are on the hook.
Sounds like “Slicklittman” is pulling stuff like our old mayor did.
And the last 6 months of trucking, grading and all other costs may have to be eatin by us ,the taxpayers.
Normally I would not respond to this, however, The city cemetery is going to be full within 18 months. You cannot use your backyard or the local trash pickup to lay your loved ones to rest. The plan was approved more than a year ago. It is necessary period. A section for Veterans, and by the way, I doubt if Concern Veteran is a veteran, will cost nothing extra. Many local veterans want to be interred in Mesquite, not over 100 miles away.
Money has been set aside for this project, and cut the Mormon comment, they only indicate ignorance.
When was it approved? By whom?
And what if the federal govverment does not pay for it?
And was it put out on bid or just awarded to the mormon trucking and grading company ?
How about it littman
This would be wonderful! I think it’s a great idea, would it be similar to the one in Boulder City, although much smaller? For those folks who are retired military living in Mesquite I would think you would be thrilled! Great job Mayor Litman!
