It was a year of improvement for Bulldog golfer Ryan Baeza as he won the Nevada 3A State Golf Tournament by shooting a 143 over 36 holes in Boulder City on May 14 and 15. Baeza placed second in 2011 with a total score of 154.
Ironically Baeza’s closest competitor at state was Luke Logan of Boulder City High School with a score of 154. Baeza’s 11-stroke improvement this year was the difference. Baeza also placed third in 2010 with a score of 153. “We had a lot of help this year from the pro’s at the various Mesquite golf courses,” said Coach Kirk Hafen. “They helped us with our putting and short game. The community help makes the difference in our program.”
Baeza lit up the Boulder Creek course front nine with a 31 and followed with a 38 on the back to take the first day lead with an overall 69. Baeza outdistanced his competitors on the second day by shooting a 74 on the tougher Boulder City Municipal Course Logan was the only other competitor to break 80 with a 79 score. It was an emotional day for Baeza as his sister Felisha, 2009 Girls NIAA State Champion rooted him on.
