The Sunrise Mountain High School Miners defeated the Virgin Valley High School Bulldogs 3-1 in a Sunrise League match Monday night at the Hughes Middle School gym. Service errors by the ‘Dawgs dominated the first match of the evening. The Miners steady play at the service line gave them a distinct advantage over the Bulldogs. Miners Janae Yurek-Carhee and Tania Amaya had 14 aces to lead their team.
The Miners came out strong in the first match going up 4-0 before a block by Bulldog Kirston Tanner gave the ‘Dawgs a side out. Back to back service errors increased the Miners lead to 6-2 before Alexis Thompson ace for the Bulldogs cut the Miners lead to 6-5. The Miners increased their lead to 24-13 led by Carhee’s three kills. Facing match point the Bulldogs seemed to come to life with Cassandra James serving. The Bulldogs ran off five straight points before a service error ended the match at 25-18.
Bulldogs Kourtney Metzger and Alora Bonner led the Bulldogs in the night’s second match with excellent play on the front line. Two kills by Metzger kept the ‘Dawgs in the match trailing by a score of 6-5. Three straight aces by Amaya gave the Miners a 11-5 lead. Bonner brought the Bulldogs back with fine play at the net and two aces from the service line. Metzger and Bonner had kills keeping the score close at 20-18 in favor of the Miners. The Miners pulled away to win 25-21.
The Bulldogs facing game elimination came to life in the third match winning 25-23. The Bulldogs trailed 14-7 before Bonner led them back with two aces and six straight points to tie the match at 14-14. The teams traded points the rest of the way leaving the score at 23-23 before Metzger’s two huge blocks gave the ‘Dawgs the win. Service errors continued to haunt the Bulldogs as they had seven in the match.
The fourth and last match of the evening was evenly played for the first half as the teams were tied 11-11. Two huge blocks by Bonner on Carhee smashes led the Bulldogs. Metzger’s presence on the front line were felt, as she had a big kill during the play. The Bulldogs could only manage three points the rest of the way as the Miners shut them down winning 25-14. Bonner led the Bulldogs with seven kills, four aces, four blocks and 22 digs during the four matches. Metzger had eight kills and three blocks. The Bulldogs next home game will be on October 9 against archrival Moapa Valley.
