The Virgin Valley High School Girls football team avenged an early season loss of 13-6 to the Centennial High School Bulldogs defeating the Bulldogs 27-12 in the Dawg Pound. Confusing, Bulldogs against Bulldogs. The Centennial Bulldogs came into the game undefeated with a record of 10-0 in league play. The VVHS Bulldogs now are tied with Centennial with equal records of 10-1.
The host Lady Dawgs jumped on their counterparts early driving 80 yards to score. The Bulldogs behind the running of Stacey Warren drove to the 5 yard line before Marlene Quiarte went in for a touchdown. The touchdown was negated by a 15 yard penalty and the Dawgs were moved back to the 17 yard line. Not to be denied quarterback Karson Bryant hit her sister Taylor for a T.D. making the score 6-0. K. Bryant hit Alexis Barnum over the middle for the extra point giving the Dawgs an early 7-0 lead after five minutes of play. Centennial attempted to recover driving to the Dawgs 20 yard line before K Bryant intercepted a pass and took it to the house for a 70 yard touchdown. The extra point was good on a pass from K. Bryant to Quiarte increasing the Bulldogs lead to 14-0 with 7:37 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Dawgs held the Centennial squad to four downs and out. The Bulldogs ran off a trick play and threatened to score once more before a long Bryant pass was intercepted. The Dawgs held Centennial as the half time clock ran out.
The Centennial Bulldogs began the second half and were stopped on four straight downs by the quick hands of Warren and K. Bryant. The VVHS Lady Dawgs didn’t waste any time getting back on the score board. Passes of 10, 7 and 22 yards to Barnum, Quiarte and Warren sandwiched between an 11 and 4 yard runs by K. Bryant, the last for a touchdown upped the Bulldog lead to 20-0. The extra point pass fell short. The shocked Centennial squad came out firing on all cylinders and scored quickly to cut the Dawgs lead to 20-6 with 7:30 remaining in the game. The unflustered Bulldogs behind runs of 12, 22, and 13 yards by Quiarte, K. Bryant and Warren set up a 15 yard touchdown run by K. Bryant. K. Bryant hit Barnum in the right corner of the end zone for the extra point giving the Dawgs an insurmountable lead of 27-6 with 2:57 remaining in the game. The Centennial squad drove quickly aided by two un-sportsmanship penalties on the Dawgs to score with 1:12 remaining. The extra point failed and the score stood at 27-12 in favor of the VVHS Lady Dawgs. The Lady Dawgs K. Bryant took two kneel downs to end the game. “It was a huge win for the Bulldog program, defeating a large school like Centennial. I’m so proud of the girls, there team chemistry can’t be matched,” said Coach Joey Bowler. “Our defense played lights out. We shocked them with those two quick first half touchdowns. We win out and were the champions.”
The Bulldogs will travel to play Bonanza today and host Clark tomorrow.
