It was a tough night for the Virgin Valley High School Volleyball team Wednesday as they faced off against a strong Chaparral High School Cowboys team. The Cowboys came away with a 3-1 match advantage over their hosts at Hughes Middle School gym. The Chargers ran off seven straight points led by 6’2” Jaeda Allen forcing a Bulldog timeout to regroup. The Bulldogs managed to close within four points at 11-7 but could only manage 5 points the rest of the match as the bigger and more athletic Cowboys dominated the front line winning 25-12.
The second match of the evening was a game of runs for the Cowboys as they rattled off 9 and 7 points unanswered points. The Bulldogs could not match up with the Cowboys who won 25-8. Allen’s net play was too much for the ‘Dawgs as she dominated with her smashes.
The third match of the evening found the Bulldogs settling down behind Coach Ilona Robeson’s urging. The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 before mounting a sustained volley to take the lead at 4-3. Two kills by hitter Nikki Arquette gave the Bulldogs a lead of 13-7 halfway in the match. Cassandra James held service during the run. The Bulldogs managed to increase their lead to 17-9 before the Cowboys made a run at the Bulldogs to cut the lead to 22-20. Allen’s front line play led the Cowboys back. Robeson called an immediate time out to settle her young cowboys down. The Bulldogs won the match 25-21 behind Jasmine Pulver’s ace and three service points forcing the Cowboys into a fourth match.
The Bulldogs led early in the fourth match 2-0 before Allen had two kills to give the Cowboys a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs stayed with the Cowboys point by point before the visitors ran off five points to take the lead 15-10. Kourtney Metzger’s huge block on an Allen smash brought cheers from the Bulldog faithful. The Bulldogs trailed 24-15 with the game at match point before a making a small run at the Cowboys before a service error ended the match at 25-19 in favor of the Cowboys. The Bulldogs next home game will be on October 1 against Sunrise High School. The Bulldogs now stand at 0-2 in important League play.
