Oasis men kick off annual match play tournament

On Monday, January 21, 60 members of the Oasis Men’s Golf Club kicked off the yearly match play tournament with an individual net game that also paired a number of match play participants to start getting the brackets pared down. The Canyons course was the scene of this tourney within a tourney.

John Brewer had the day’s low round shooting 75. Jim Bowman followed with 78 and Brian Bergman and Marty Conway also shot good rounds with 79s. Conway, Bowman, and Brewer switched positions from gross scores to nets in first flight. Conway (68) took first, Bowman (69) was second in both gross and net scores and Brewer’ medalist gross score was good enough to captured third place with net par 71.

Steve Wiggins triumphed in second flight with net 66. Eddie Webb placed second with 68, Tony Molina was in the show position with 69 and Kent Epeneter rounded out the winners with a fourth place 70.

Frank Ethington and Dave Rush tied for first place honors in third flight shooting twin 67s. Terry Donnelly and Ron Hills tied for third with 68s.

Warren Schwecke was top of the fourth flight class with nets 68. Ron Flentye came in second position with 69 and Bill White shot net 75 taking third place.

The skins competition throughout the flights ranged from many to a single winner.

Bowman, Brewer, and Conway swept first flight skins taking two each.

Webb won two second flight skins. Molina, Rick Burton Dennis May, and James Morrow each won one.

Ethington scored the only third flight skin, making for a nice payday.

On the other side of the coin, 10 fourth flight skins watered down the pot.

Flentye gathered in four of the 10. Mike Edwards grabbed two. White, Bob Nelson, Mike Smith, and Dennis Summerhays gathered up one each to clear out the skins pot.

Molina capped his day by winning the closest-to-the-flag competition on hole 9.
