TUESDAY: MMGA RECORD 12 ROUNDS IN THE 30’S
The friendly confines of their home course was once again good to ten MMGA players at Falcon Ridge on Tuesday. Neil Hendricks was in town for a couple days from his summer vacation spot in California and wanted to see if he still had “his game” in the desert. He does, and he was one of 10 players who shot at least one round of nine holes under 40. He started on the front with a one over par 36 and followed it up two over par on the back for a nice round of 74. His playing partners Paul LeVan and John Meyer recorded 39’s on the front as well. Their fourth player, Sterling Johnson shot 41 on the front but probably shot his best ever round on the difficult back nine with an even par 36 aided by birdies on both par fives for a nice round of 77. Gary McCartney is improving his play, as his wrist surgery continues to improve, shooting a great one under par 34 on the front side with back to back birdies on holes eight and nine. He would finish the day two shots back of the medalist 74 with a decent score of 76. Ron Manthey would tie Hendricks for low gross as he shot a pair of 37’s and would go on to win the medalist title outright with a birdie four on the 4th handicap hole, number one. Hole number 16 which seldom sees a birdie was birdied by three players in the same foursome, LeVan, Hendricks and Johnson recorded fours.
THURSDAY: PETRICK WINS THE BATTLE OF CONESTOGA
Bubba Petrick didn’t think he played well the first time he played the Conestoga golf course. Today he said he was determined to break 80. He started his day on the par four 17th hole with a bogey. He followed that with bogies on 18 and #1. By this time he figured his goal was vanishing rather quickly. Then he birdied the par three second hole with a 15 foot putt. After a double bogey six two holes later he was about to give it up. But he went on to birdie holes six, seven and nine for a surprising even par 36 on the front nine. He would birdie another par three, the 14th for his fifth birdie of the day and completed his earlier vision for the day with a 38 and a total 74. Petrick summed up his round, “Even though my putting was not good early on I put a lot of shots near the pin during the middle holes and my flat stick got hot . All five birdies were good for skins as well. Great day Bubba and congrats on breaking Conestoga’s back. Tom Corzine (89) and Tom Greer (88) tied
for low net with net 74 scores. Hey, that was the same gross score of Petrick if you are paying attention. Corzine won first place on the third handicap hole with a bogey. John Meyer (84), Pat Huetter (90), Joel Reilly (98) and Manny Lira (100) all tied for third low net with 75’s.
