The “Independence” Challenge golf tourney was held at the Falcon Ridge course this past Monday. The two man teams played a different format than usual and seem to respond well to the new challenge. The 1st six was Alternate Shot-- partners switched positions after each shot and played that way until holed out. The 2nd six was Best-Ball-- Then the 3rd six was a Scramble. Low score for each format was, Alternate Shot ( 21 )-- Best-Ball ( 24 )-- Scramble ( 21 ). I have to say i am surprised at the low score in the Alternate Shot format. Our Linksters are very good at adapting to any style of play.
The Ben Bishop--Terry Spriggs team won this one by shooting a smooth 67 gross/59.8 net. This was a 3 shot margin. The widest margin in this series to date. I hear that Terry was in awe of Big Ben's long game. The John Johnson/Gary Slater team took 2nd place net monies by less than a half stroke over 3rd place team Ron Nickle/Jim Buttler. ( 62.84 ) vs ( 63.32 ). I know all will say this is sour grapes but Ron and I left at least 15 strokes out on the course. The old 49er saying fits in here ( wait til next year ). David Wargacki/John Bentley will say the same as they finished in 4th place less than another half stroke behind. three other teams were within a stroke of placing in the money.
The par three prizes went to-- Hole #2-- Jim “bubba " Petrick-- Hole #5--John Johnson-- Hole #8--Rick Hawes-- Holes #14 & 17 went to the winning team, Bishop/Spriggs.
A good time was had by all on a beautiful day on the course in Mesquite. After golf the teams enjoyed a great lunch provided by the Falcon Ridge club house crew. And as always, the fine treatment from Brian Wursten and his staff made us feel welcome and appreciated.
