The seventh annual Mesquite Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was named a huge success by Executive Director Anne Miranda.

The event held at the Falcon Ridge Golf Course on Saturday at 7 a.m. had 93 golfers teeing off in a shotgun start in 84 degree weather. “Last year we had 128 golfers, this year 93. Our hole-sponsorship program went up substantially and our raffle prizes exceed $6000 dollars,” said Miranda. “This is our biggest fund raiser of the year. I want to thank our 12 volunteers who worked their tails off,” added Miranda.

Prior to play, Councilman Geno Withelder, Karen Fielding, Anne Miranda, Pat Taylor, Cheri Thompson and Sandra Ramaker registered players and sold ‘mulligans’.

Like an Indy race, all competitors were asked to get to their golf carts and proceed to their assigned hole. The format for play was a four person scramble in which the best shot was used at each stroke of play.
Withelder explained the rules and acted as tourney director and spokesman. From the smiles and laughter found throughout the golf course, most players were having a good time.
Mayor Mark Weir, with a big smile on his face, attempted to hide from this reporter without avail. Found on the 11th hole, Weir stepped up and hit a fairly long drive down the middle. The day seemed to start well for the Mayor.

“We played last year and had such a good time, we decided to return,” said Las Vegas resident Rich Richardson, speaking of he and his wife. He had a huge drive from the 12th tee box. This is one of the prettiest golf-holes on the course; a par five with a long dog-leg over a lake.

After play ended all participants were served lunch in the club house as they awaited the results.

Winners with a 56 score were Leigh Roessner, Dean Kilmer and Jeff and Lucy Jensen. Moderator Withelder called his own name as he won closest to the hole on fourteen and proceeded to donate his ‘substantial winnings’ back to the raffle. After the raffle all left the building with another good day of golf behind them.
