I’ve received a couple of e-mails this week from friends who I knew in the military. They should be of interest to veterans, military retirees and active duty members.
While many of us are supporting the military as wars continue in the Middle East not everyone is. Some people are even trying to defraud our servicemen and women.
The Pentagon has issued a warning to watch for bogus e-mails.
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), which manages accounting and financial operations in the Defense Department, is warning about scam e-mails seeking personal information.
The messages, like all such scams, look official. They claim to come from a DFAS employee, and have a .mil address.
“The emails indicate that individuals who are receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may be able to obtain additional funds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS),” says a notice on the DFAS Web site. “These emails are not issued by DFAS and will likely result in a financial loss if you comply with the suggestions in the email.
Do not send any personal information or copies of your tax returns and 1099s to the person listed or you’re putting enough information into his hands to cost you money.
