When did pornography become a city issue?

A woman stood and had our mayor read her anti-porno proclamation at the Oct. 23 Mesquite City Council meeting, which pretty much stated pornography was the gateway to incest, rape, infidelity, child molestation and the end of civilized society as we know it.

The guys all quickly passed this ridiculous measure with five votes. That's politically correct but c'mon.  Which one of them never looked at Playboy?   Apparently you can wear a white ribbon to share your support against "porn?”  Porn was never described! What about what is on cable?  What about the 50 Shades of Grey book series sold at Walmart and is a huge bestseller that anyone with a fist full of dollars at any age can buy. Is that porno?

I was blown away that these men just hit the little buttons that light up the board to pass this and then moved on like nothing had happened.  After all, the Long Drive issue was the real agenda, of course, and many other important matters. That's why most of us were attending the meeting.

But this is not 1958, and I for one found this extremely disturbing.  The woman should keep her puritanical mission to her church and family -- this is not a city agenda.

I’m 58; been married 28 years with one son who’s a successfully married business man with no children. I love Mesquite; moved here three years ago.
