Sun City Mesquite invites the community to come out and support the local veterans this weekend at theSun Cityclubhouse and grounds located at1350 Flat Top Mesa Dr.,Mesquite. This year’s “celebration of service” events include tennis, bocce, golf and billiards tournaments, a barbecue by the 1880 Grille, raffles, t-shirts, ice crème and bingo. The newestSun Cityclub the Sun City Sounds will also perform.
The official ceremonies are to begin with the Presentation of the Colors and the raising of the flags at 7:45 a.m.
“The city council will be here along with theMesquiteVeteransCenter(representatives),” lifestyle director Deborah Demos explained. “Armed forces day is a celebration of service…We have dedicated Armed Forces day every year to Mesquite veterans so the proceeds we make this one day will be going to them to help with their operating expenses…100% of the net proceeds goes to the center.”
The day’s activities will consist of a variety of tournaments including tennis, bocce, golf and billiards. There will also be a barbecue lunch provided by the 1880s Grille, raffles and patriotic songs provided by the Sun City Sounds. Besides the sporting events, there is to be a small retail booth selling hats, t-shirts, ice crème and raffle tickets for prizes donated by community businesses and individuals.
Demos encouraged anyone interested in supporting the veterans or competing in the tournaments to come up. “People out there in theMesquitearea if they play tennis, if they play bocce, if they love pool (billiards) and want to play a game of pool… (should come up), and everybody can putt. You don’t need to play golf in order to putt.”
Putters will be available for loan to non-golfers and Demos noted that it was an excellent opportunity for those who did not live inSun Cityto use the facilities, which are generally available only to residents.
Tournament entry fees are $12, which includes a patriotic t-shirt while they last. Net proceeds from the tournaments, raffles and sales of t-shirts will go to the veterans’ center. Two dollars per entrant in the bingo game will also go to the center.
The tennis tournament will start before the official launch of the day’s activities due to the heat.
