The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled consumer sessions Sept. 26-27 to hear public comment regarding a petition on behalf of the Nevada telecommunications industry to implement a new area code in the existing 702 exchange.
According to NeuStar, the organization that administers area code use, available numbers in the 702 area code serving Southern Nevada will be exhausted during the third quarter of 2014. NeuStar recommends a new area code that would be superimposed on the same geographic area as the existing 702 area code. Existing customers would retain their current telephone numbers.
As proposed, starting in June 2014 new telephone numbers in the existing 702 area code would be assigned the new area code. Calls between and within the existing and new area codes would require 10-digit dialing.
If a new area code is approved, NeuStar recommends a 16-month implementation schedule beginning in February 2013 with network preparation and customer education.
