Sept. 17-21 Virgin Valley Elementary School students celebrated “U.S. Constitution Week.”
At flag ceremony each morning the students learned interesting facts about the Constitution such as: more than 11,000 amendments have been introduced in Congress, but only 33 have gone to the states to be ratified and only 27 have received the necessary approval from the states to actually become amendments to the Constitution.
Although George Washington served as President of the Constitutional Convention, James Madison is considered the father of the U.S. Constitution because of his many contributions and efforts to ratify the document.
The Constitution has 4,543 words, including the signatures and takes about half an hour to read. The Declaration of Independence has 1, 458 words with the signatures, but is slower reading as it takes about 10 minutes.
